FASHION
AUGUST STYLE HIGHLIGHTS

After living in Australia for the past 7 years, Vivian Quah has moved back and brought a piece of Australia with her. Discovering her love for fashion upon moving to Australia, Vivian has brought a breath of fresh air to the tenant mix in BSC. Her minimalist chic store pays tribute to exclusively Australian fashion designers, such as Sass & Bide and Zimmerman, with the intention to make a creative impact on the direction that style and fashion is moving towards in KL. We got to meet with the vivacious owner of the recently opened ‘August Store’, and ask her a few questions about how she got to open her first store in BSC.

Q: Is this your first retail store?
If so, why did you feel BSC would be the best fit for it?
A: Yes this is the first retail store opened by myself. I decided on BSC mainly because of the target market and that there was no specific shopping destination in the mall. BSC is mainly known for its F&B and I just wanted to bring something different: a breath of fresh air for shoppers.

Q: What made you want to go into retail?
A: When I was doing my degree in Australia I had a part time job in retail for Sass & Bide. I ended up working with them for 3 years and became a personal shopper. So when I eventually wanted to come back home to KL, I thought about what I could do here and that’s how this all started.

Q: Right now you only carry Australian brands – will you be branching out or sticking strictly to Australia? If so, why?
A: We’re going to stick strictly to Australian brands because when I was working there, I discovered that Australian designers have so much potential and their stuff is so beautiful yet it goes unrecognized, especially in Malaysia. I think Malaysia is too focused on European brands and neglect what Australia has to offer.

Q: You’ve been open for about 5 months now – tell us about your experience in retail at BSC
A: It started off really slow because a lot of people hadn’t heard of the brands and were really surprised by the prices but slowly, they’re beginning to understand the brands and there have been a few Australian customers who feel that slight connection to home. It’s getting there. BSC’s A&P team has been helpful with the start-up of the store too.

Q: Have you always been interested in fashion?
A: Never been a huge fan until I worked in Australia and discovered the designers there. It really opened my eyes up to a new sense of style and fashion and just a whole new way of dressing up. There was so much to learn. It differs to Europe in the sense that they are very classic with their look, whereas Australian designers are so up-and-coming, they have no restrictions on playing around with different looks. It’s a lot more adventurous and that’s what makes it interesting .

Q: Do you think you’ll one day go into fashion design yourself?
A: I learnt how to sew when I was working there but I don’t think so. It’s really hard to make it in the fashion industry and it’s so competitive. I’d rather stick to retail and speak for the designers than go into design myself.

Q: Where do you see the world of retail going in the future?
A: Online. It is a potential threat to bricks and mortar stores, but it’s the current trend and where retail is heading towards. It does mean you miss out on the whole experience of trying clothes on and really appreciating what you’re buying, but it is convenient. We’re in the midst of putting our store online so all our clothes in the store will be available online hopefully, but the beginning of next year. I’m also looking towards expanding to Australia and doing a reserve concept – so Asian designers being brought to Australia because again, it’s untapped potential.
